Edible plants
There’s no reason to settle for the old standbys when it comes to ground covers and edging plants for your landscape. When you take the edible garden landscaping approach, a wide variety of delicious plants is available to fill your yard’s need for a ground cover as well as edging plants. Use herbs, fruits and even vegetables to create a beautiful cover that you’ll also enjoy in your kitchen.
Fruit trees are a mainstay of okay-to-eat yards. Not only do the trees offer wonderful fruit, most also have striking blossoms that pave the way for the produce. Remember that when fruit is left to die on the tree, it can influence the health and productivity of the tree in the subsequent season. If your trees yield more fruit than you can consume, be giving with your neighbors, friends and local food banks.
A trendy option is to grow peppers and tomatoes in pots and lattice on a deck or patio. These plants will add color and life to your backyard. If you add herbs to a flowerbed, the robust scent of the many assortments will add to your pleasure of your yard. Some herbs, like mint, dill and rosemary, will actually repel insects. Specific combinations of plants will really bring your garden to life. For example, with tomatoes add parsley. For flowerbeds, add chives and sage.
Edible plant parts
Most plants are made up of roots, stems, leaves, flowers, buds and produce fruits containing seeds. We most commonly eat the seeds (e.g. maize, wheat, coffee and various nuts), fruit (e.g. tomato and apple), leaves (e.g. lettuce, spinach, and cabbage), or roots (e.g. carrots and beets), but we also eat the stems of many plants (e.g. asparagus). There are also a few edible petioles (leaf stalks) such as celery, as well as some edible flowers.
